Overview Information

Activated charcoal is made from peat, wood, Coconut, shell or petroleum and coal. In short activated charcoal I similar to common charcoal. The makers make this charcoal by heating charcoal in the presence of a gas. This process causes the charcoal to develop lots of internal spaces or pores, the pores help activated charcoal” trap chemicals”.

This charcoal is commonly taken by mouth to treat poising, intestinal gas (flatulence), high cholesterol, hangovers, upset stomach and bile flow problems.

It can be applied to the skin as part of the bandage to help heal wounds.

How it Functions

The charcoal works by trapping chemicals and preventing their absorption.

Poisoning- it is useful for trapping chemicals to stop some types of poisoning when used as part of standard treatment. Activated charcoal should be given within 1 hour after a poison has been ingested. Otherwise if given after an hour or more hours after it might not work for some poisons. And does not seem to work for all types of poisons.

Some Scientific challenge

Diarrhea caused by cancer drug irinotecan:

irinotecan is a cancer treating drug known to cause diarrhea. Research shows that taking activated charcoal during treatment with irinotecan reduces diarrhea including severe diarrhea in children talking this drugs, but scientists still don’t fully agree to this idea.

Kidney Health

Activated charcoal helps kidney function by filtering out undigested toxins and drugs.

It seems effective especially at removing toxins derived from urea, the main byproduct of protein digestion.

Water filtration

People have long used activated charcoal as a natural water filter. Just as it does in the intestines and stomach, activated charcoal can interact with and absorb a range of toxins, drugs, viruses, bacteria, fungus, and chemicals found in water.

Teeth whitening and oral health

Dozens of teeth-whitening products contain activated charcoal.

 

Many oral health products that contain activated charcoal claim to have various benefits, such as being:

detoxifying

Skin care

Researchers have reported that activated charcoal can help draw microparticles, such as dirt, dust, chemicals, toxins, and bacteria, to the surface of the skin, to make removing them easier.

 

Deodorant

Various activated charcoal deodorants are widely available. Charcoal may absorb smells and harmful gases, making it ideal as an underarm, shoe, and refrigerator deodorant.

 

Activated charcoal is also reported to be able to absorb excess moisture and control humidity levels at a micro level.

 

Skin infection

Around the world, many different traditional medicine practitioners use activated charcoal powder made from coconut shells to treat soft tissue conditions, such as skin infections.

 

Activated charcoal may have an antibacterial effect by absorbing harmful microbes from wounds. Several are available commercially.

Reducing Gas –(Flatulence)

. Some study cases show that activated charcoal is very effective in reducing intestinal gas while others don’t agree though it is too early to come to a conclusion on this.

 

Indigestion. Some early studies shows that taking of certain combination products containing activated charcoal and simethicone with or without magnesium oxide, can reduce pain, bloating and feeling of fullness in people with indigestion. Though not clear if taken a lone can help.

Lowering Phosphate levels in people on dialysis-

 if pregnant mothers take activated charcoal daily for about 24 weeks it will reduce phosphate levels in people on hemodialysis who have high phosphate levels. This could explain why some expectant mothers eat charcoal during pregnancy period.

Treat reduced bile flow (cholestasis) during pregnancy

by taking activated charcoal by mouth seems to help treat cholestasis in pregnancy as per early research.

Preventing hangover: this charcoal is included in some hangover remedies, it helps in reducing or completely clearing hangovers though some experts are skeptical about how well it might work.

Toxic effect from anti-seizure drug phenytoin:

it helps remove phenytoin from the body bringing the phenytoin levels back to normal range.

Wound healing:

studies shows it can be used for wound healing, using bandages with activated charcoal helps heal wounds in people with venous leg ulcers though some research say It does not.

Side effect include

Activated charcoal is in most cases safe taken by mounth for most adults. Short term or when applied to wounds. Though some may experience constipation and black stools. More serious , but rare side effects are slowing or blockage of the intestinal tract, regurgitation into the lungs, and dehydration.

Dosage

For adults: Oral dosage

For Drug Overdose or poisoning 50-100 grams of activated charcoal should be given at first then followed by every 2.4 hours at a dose equal to 12.5 grams hourly. At times a single dose of 25-100 grams might be used.

For children:

Oral: For drug overdose or poisoning: Activated 10-25 grams is recommended for kids less than a year old.

While a dosage of 25-50 grams is recommended for children between 1-12 years of age.
